Double Take

“But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the LORD had closed her womb.” (1 Samuel 1:5)

In the 2001 comedy Double Take, Eddie Griffin played an investment banker who switched places with a petty thief. The movie didn’t do too well at the box office, but there is a message there for us as God is promising that He will give us double for our trouble. Although Hannah is barren, her husband Elkanah loved her more than his other wife Penninah and gave her a double portion. Hannah only asked God for one son which she named Samuel, but God was so generous He gave her three sons and two daughters (1 Samuel 2:21).

God was so pleased with the faith of Abraham when he was willing to sacrifice Isaac his only son that He gave him an uncountable Star Search blessing. “Blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of his enemies.” (Genesis 22:17). God will restore double for what the devil stole from us “Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. Even today I declare that I will restore double to you.” (Zechariah 9:12). And according to Ephesians 3:20, God is such a BIG God that He will not just restore double but will also bless us exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask and think.

God loves to double up. He gave Elisha twice the anointing that was on Elijah. He gave Job twice as much as he had before. “And the LORD restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.” (Job 42:10). Job was blessed double because he prayed for his friends who were against him. We are commanded to bless others, especially people we don’t like or our enemies, by Jesus in Matthew 5:44-45, “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

When we bless others, if the recipient is not worthy, then that blessing will come back to us, and this is the one of the way we receive God’s blessings. “If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.” (Matthew 10:13). You don’t need Harry Potter to lead you to the Chamber of Secrets. The Bible is full of secrets that will bless you and change your life for the better. Double up on your time spent in the Word so that with increased wisdom and revelation from the Word of God, you’ll receive a Double Take, and then some.
