Restoration

“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.” (Joel 2:25)

In the 1995 movie Restoration, Robert Downey Jr played a doctor who saved the life of someone close to King Charles II and was promoted to living the royal life in the king’s court. Things turn worse when he fell in love with the king’s new wife and was kicked out, only to rediscover his love of medicine. God has much more to say about Restoration than the movie. Indeed God is promising us that He will restore what we lost, whatever the devil stole from us through the years and that was Jesus’ express purpose for coming to earth.

“For the Son of Man [Jesus] has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10). God will restore all the things that we have lost for years due to sickness, divorce, lack, loneliness, shame, isolation, debt, poverty and oppression. God’s restoration is fourfold for the locusts eat the leaves, the cankerworm the trunk, the caterpillar the roots, and the palmerworm the fruits of the tree. When God restores, He does it exceedingly abundantly above and beyond what we expect (Ephesians 3:20) and He does it all the way from the root to the fruit.

God will also restore the joy of our salvation. After his sins with Bathsheba, David prayed to God to restore to him the joy of salvation. In spite of his sins, David was a man after God’s own heart, “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.” (Acts 13:22). When David sin against God he lost his peace, joy, and righteousness but God did restore and He will if we repent like David did. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit” (Psalm 51:10-12).

If we stop following Tom Hanks and turn away from the Road to Perdition, then God will build us up and prosper us. “If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up; you will remove iniquity far from your tents. Then you will lay your gold in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks. Yes, the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver.” (Job 22:23-25). James Bond only Live Twice and he may Die Another Day, he can only get us Goldfinger or Goldeneye, but God will get us so much gold that they are like dust or stones if we return to Him, because Nobody Does It Better.
