Fools Rushed In

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7)

In the 1997 comedy Fools Rush In, Matthew Perry the American fell in love with and married a feisty Latina played by Salma Hayek. The Bible talks a lot about fools, although calling someone a fool was not necessarily a bad name. A simple fool, from the Hebrew peti, is a person who made mistakes but quickly fixed them and was restored to God and others.

King David was a simple fool who made mistakes, but kept a repentant heart toward God. That is why God called David a man after His own heart. The hardened fool in Proverbs 1:29-32, or kesil and ewil in Hebrew, makes mistakes, but never learns from them and will not listen to others. They do not fear God and can expect God’s rod of correction and will eat the bitter fruits of their wrongdoings.

King Saul was a hardened fool because he made mistakes and keep on making them even after realizing he was wrong. To err is human, and if we've made mistakes before God and get off the Road to Perdition that will allow Him to intervene on our behalf and avoid doing the same thing in the future, God will pour out His Holy Spirit on us (Proverbs 1:23) and will make known His Word to us through the teachings of ministries like this.

The third level of foolery is the mocking fool or letz in Hebrew. The mocking fool is a scoffer or scorner and mocks the things of God. Cynical people who disregard the Bible or the things of God are mocking fools. The fourth level is the God-denying fool or nabal in Proverbs 17:21. The nabal is a morally wicked person who brings sorrow on his family and who despises righteousness and holy living. His father would have no joy because he would say, “God is dead,” or “There’s no God,” and by refusing to acknowledge God’s existence, he declares himself to be a God-denying fool.

We can share the gospel with simple fools, those who make mistakes but seek to learn from them, but we should avoid hardened fools, because Jesus didn’t spend much time trying to convince the rich young ruler after telling him the truth. Hardened fools, mocking fools and God-denying fools must be broken by the tribulations of life before they can become simple fools, and it’s best to let the devil Whip It Good like Devo until those Fools Rush In to receive the precious truth of the Word of God.
