The Sunshine Boys

“But to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go out and grow fat like stall-fed calves. You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this, says the LORD of hosts.” (Malachi 4:2-3)

In 1975 Walter Matthau and George Burns starred in the Neil Simon classic The Sunshine Boys about a vaudeville duo who just couldn’t stand each other. The good news from the prophet Malachi is that we don’t have to be funny to enjoy the sunshine of God’s blessings. We all can be The Sunshine Boys if we fear God and obey His Word. There are times when we may feel that serving God had little reward and the ungodly like Hugh Hefner appeared to be more blessed than us, or at least they know how to party like it’s 1999.

At the time of Malachi or about 400 BC, the people of God felt the same way. God heard their cry and responded in Malachi 3:16-18: Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD listened and heard them; so a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who feared the LORD and who meditate on His name. “They shall be Mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “on the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him. Then you shall again discern between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.”

After the people complained about how useless it was to serve God while the proud were blessed and the wicked prosper (Malachi 3:14-15), they began to talk to one another, and God listened and heard. Unbeknownst to them, the all-knowing God had been keeping score of those who were serving Him, obeying Him and honoring Him in His book of remembrance. God is a fair Judge in the Supreme Court of heaven and unlike many CEOs, He doesn’t cook the books. Harvest day is coming in which God will honor His
precious jewels and His treasured possessions. That will be the day when the entire earth is a Treasure Planet to those who treasure the Word of God.

Everybody will see a clear distinction between the righteous and the wicked on that day when the Sun of Righteousness will arise with healing in His wings, and the faithful will go out, grow fat, leap like calves released from the stall, and trample on the ashes of the wicked. The bottom line in God’s economy is faithful obedience, not matter how painful, is always rewarded by God and no good deed goes unpunished. Payday requires suffering, patience, endurance, and perseverance but be cheerful, for payday comes only if we don’t quit.
