MacGiver

So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:7-8)

From 1985-1992 there was a TV show called MacGyver starring Richard Dean Anderson as a crime fighter using no guns but only the laws of science. We may not have aced our science classes in school but we are called to be givers because God is a giver. Everything God created gives, the sun gives light, the animals give meat, and the trees give fruits.
In fact, we as His children are to be MacGivers or children of the Giver. God wants us to give, because if we don’t, His gospel of salvation will not get preached, the lost won’t get saved, and we won’t grow spiritually.

The only difference between a carnal, selfish person of the world and a child of God is that God’s children learn to copy their Father in heaven, obey His Word and give. God has made it possible for us to possess all that we have. If it weren’t for God, we wouldn’t have it in the first place and we’re accountable to Him for how we use the money for the mission.

God expects us to return His tithe (10 percent of our gross income which are holy and are His, not ours!) to support His mission on earth on good ground such as churches and ministries that teach and preach the Word of God to the nations. God also wants us to give offerings ABOVE the tithe whenever the Holy Spirit leads us. Offerings or seeds sown honor God for financial blessings, favor, finding a good spouse, or the birth of a child and we can expect to receive a windows of heaven harvest in Malachi 3 on what we’ve sown.

God wants us to give regularly and cheerfully at all times and not just on the holidays with Silver Bells ringing or Chestnuts Roasting. God wants us to be generous with what we have but doesn’t expect us to give more than we can. God doesn’t expect us to respond to secular appeal for money like AIDS research, Jerry Lewis telethons, political fundraisers, the in-laws, or drunks at the freeway onramps, just the ones He prompts us and we are to sow only on good anointed ground where the meat of the Word of God is preached with deep revelations.

We must not give with ulterior motives to get attention, tax writeoffs, or to earn frequent flyer miles with God. Giving that pleases God is motivated by thanksgiving for who God is and what He has done for us. Give to glorify God and bless other people, whom He loves. God will bless us richly when we give, by providing for all our needs and transforming us into His image and likeness. We don’t have to worry that giving to God’s work will leave us without enough for our own needs, and we’ll always be enriched by giving and will have an abundance for every good work and charitable donation.

We need to give until it hurts, till it Hurts So Good because God wants us to give sacrificially just like He did when He gave His only Son Jesus to die on the cross for all of us. When we’re prosperous, we should not turn a blind eye on others who are needy. When we’re in need, we should be honest, humble, accept help and thank God profusely.
