The Color of Money

“The earth is the LORD’s and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” (Psalm 24:1)

In the 1986 movie The Color of Money, pool shark Fast Eddie played by Paul Newman taught the young upstart Tom Cruise how to hustle for money. Our money-hungry culture teaches that those with the most money with the most toys and the prettiest women are winners. God’s purposes for money are to display His glory and blessings in our lives and more importantly, to finance the preaching of the gospel of salvation so lost souls will get saved.

In God’s economy, winners are selected by financial management based on the Word of God, not the size of their bank accounts. Money Talks, and Godly stewardship based on the Word of God will determine how rich we are for God is the ultimate paymaster. God owns everything, He is the Creator and He appointed man to manage His creation (Genesis 2:15). We believers are just His management company, and although we are free to make our own choices, the choices we make must give God glory. God did not create us to be robots but gave us free will to be His sons from afar and daughters from the ends of the earth (Isaiah 43:6).

God receives great glory from people who willingly serve Him and He promised us that if we are willing and obedient, we will eat the good of the land (Isaiah 1:9). God knows our giving and tithing records better than the taxman or our spouses, He wants to know if we really love Him, and He tests that love by seeing the entries on our checkbooks. Forget about Janet Jackson, what have YOU done for God lately?

Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley may be Serving Sarah, but we are to serve others because of God’s goodness to us. Divine economics is not doing something for God with our money, but doing something for others with God’s money. We act on God’s behalf and in His name when we tithe and give offerings to support the preaching of God’s Word and when we help the needy. The apostle Paul described himself as a servant to everyone (1 Corinthians 9:19) and always seeking their good (1 Corinthians 10:24, 33).

We are to look not only at our own interests, but also the interests of others (Philippians 2:4). We should have a servant’s heart like Jesus (Philippians 2:7), for stewardship is an expression of our love for God and the manifestation of that love in our relationships to others. In God’s economy, what we sow on earth will yield a harvest in heaven. Paul explained to the Philippians who were supporting him: Not that I seek a gift [from your giving], but I seek the fruit [the blessing, favor, and increase] that abounds to your [future, heavenly] account (Philippians 4:17).

Woody Allen wants us to Take The Money and Run, but giving builds heavenly treasure by transferring wealth from our earthly bank account to our heavenly account that cannot be stolen, devalued, levied, or taxed. This heavenly account is judgement-proof, divorce-proof, bankruptcy-proof, government-proof, inflation-proof, and bulletproof. We don’t need Allstate or any insurance because it is already in the good hands of God. God is eternal, He operates beyond time and space and that is The Color of Money in His kingdom.
