The Emperor’s Club

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4-5)

In the movie The Emperor’s Club, Kevin Kline played a classics professor at a prep school in 1972 who was learning life’s lessons and passing it on to his students. The good news is we don’t need Kevin Kline to be in The Emperor’s Club for God is the King of kings and Emperor of emperors, and we as His dear children were created to be winners, to rule and to reign. In Genesis, man was originally created as the lord of the manor with the earth as his fiefdom. God gave him power and dominion over the earth and everything that crept, flew, swam, jumped, ran, grew, crawled, and breathed there.

Man didn’t even know what sin was until he separated himself from the glory of God through Adam’s disobedience and high treason in the Garden of Eden. When Adam ate that forbidden fruit he was on the Road to Perdition, the ground was cursed with thorns, man was forced to work by the sweat of his brow, and was demoted to an inferior position. But as born again children of God through faith in Jesus, the really good news, the gospel of salvation that we must proclaim to all the world so all men can be winners, is that we’ve been made winners once again.

Unlike the gimmicks from Publishers Clearinghouse, we are already winners because God has guaranteed our success, for He said in His Word that we’re an overcomer and can overcome any problem the devil or the world may throw at us (1 John 2:14 and 5:1-5). It doesn’t matter how depressed we feel or how many times we’ve failed, if we believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God, then we’ve become much more than a conqueror in Him than Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan ever was (Romans 8:37).

We are much more than a conqueror because Jesus did all the conquering and gave us the the spoils of victory through His precious shed Blood so that we don’t even have to lift a finger. It doesn’t mean, however, that we won’t have any trouble. It simply means we can endure and emerge triumphant because no weapons formed against us will prosper (Isaiah 54:17).

If you’ve been feeling down and out lately, renew your mind to the Word of God that says you’re a success. When problems arise, just say, “Praise the LORD, thank God I can beat this because I’m much more than a conqueror.” Join the club, let that Word of absolute victory from God abide in your heart, and it’ll make a winner out of you no matter what happens.
