Bridges to Babylon

Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.” (Revelation 18:10)

Back in 1997, Bridges to Babylon was a hot selling album and profitable world tour for the Rolling Stones. The Bible says, however, that we should not cross the Bridges to Babylon because soon God will judge the Babylons of the world. Babylon is a Dog Eat Dog carnal way of doing business where the measure of success is money, power and ego. Dependence on cooked books, insider deals, greedy fat cat executives, stock manipulations, money and misplaced trust are the very fibers of the Babylonian fabric of life. The recent Wall Street scandals are just the tip of the iceberg with many Gordon Gekkos still running Babylon.

Robin Williams may be scary in One Hour Photo, but Revelation 18 says God will destroy Babylon in one hour. Although the World Trade Center towers came down in about an hour on 9/11 and many thought New York is Babylon because it is the financial capital of America, Babylon is not a particular city, but a world economic system. We are commanded by God to “come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.” (Revelation 18:4)

After the clear warning shot across the bow on 911, we must heed the signs of the times with the Hollywood release of the Lords of the Ring sequel The Two Towers. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, many knew it was going to happen because they could see the Gorbachev handwriting on the Berlin Wall that came down in 1989. It’s Shake and Bake time and God has a divine way of shaking things up. Jerry Lee Lewis won’t be around, but there’ll be a Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On and these shakings will force us to determine who and what we will place our trust in. Is it the gods of money, power, pleasure and SELF or is it God Almighty who created the universe? God says that we are to love Him with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our mind (Matthew 22:37).

If any of us are still living in Babylon in the way we fail to put God FIRST, in the way we lie, cheat and steal to do business, in the way we keep God’s tithes and offerings and ignoring the building of God’s house by failing to finance the preaching of the gospel so the lost will get saved, then expect to share in the sins of Babylon when God judges her. Arnold or the Terminator won’t be around to save on Judgment Day, so those of us who don’t put God first or obey His Word better repent, get off the Road to Perdition, burn the Bridges to Babylon once and for all, and do the right things with God now.
