We’re Talking Serious Money

“Honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.” (Proverbs 3:9-10)

In the 1992 comedy We’re Talking Serious Money starring Dennis Farina and Fran Drescher, two misfits lost a borrowed $10,000 from a mob boss and must flee from New York to Los Angeles. The good news is God can bless us with a whole lot more than $10,000 if we obey His Word concerning our finances. If we want God to honor and bless us in any area of our lives, we have to honor Him in that particular area. Money Talks, and if we want to be blessed financially, we have to honor God with our money, with the firstfruits of all our increase. That is, we have to tithe.

Unlike Hollywood, We’re Talking Serious Money when God will fill our barns with plenty and loads our vats or presses with so much grapes that they overflow with new wine. We may think that we have bills to pay, things to buy, mouths to feed and just can’t afford to tithe, but the truth is that we can’t afford not to! If we don’t honor God with money that He allowed us to have in the first place because it is He who gives us the power to get wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18), we’ll be in the same or worse position next year than we are now.

God doesn’t need our money but He knows the temptations of money so He tests us with it. Tithing simply boils down to this: do we love God or do we love money? So be like Nike and Just Do It, especially if it looks like we can’t afford to. Chances are, our barns are empty and our vats are dormant because many of us just don’t tithe. We are to give God what is right, not what is left. God is faithful, and if we’ll honor Him by giving Him the first ten percent of our gross income or any increase that belongs to Him, He’ll help us go much longer than 8 Mile with the rest. In fact, according to Malachi 3 God will open the windows of heaven and pour for us a blessing so big that we don’t have room to receive it, and He’ll rebuke the devourer for our sakes.

Honor God by returning to God His first ten percent to the storehouse where we are taught the meat of the Word and then honor Him some more with offerings above the tithe to support ministries that teach and preach the Word of God to the nations. Do it in faith, expecting to receive the blessings that come to the tither. As we tithe, worship God and be thankful for what He has already done for us. God owns it all and we just can’t outgive God. When we tithe and obey God’s Word to the letter, we’ll be amazed at what a generous and loving God can do to bless us.
