Spirited Away

“Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying ‘Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ This is desert. So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship.” (Acts 8:26-27)

Disney’s animated film Spirited Away was a box office smash in Japan, but it did not connect well with the American audience. God, however, speaks through this film because He wants us to be so sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit that we can be Spirited Away. Philip was preaching and whipping the devil good in Samaria where many who were paralyzed and lame were being healed and those possessed by unclean spirits were delivered. (Acts 8:5-7)

There was great joy in the city and yet, in the middle of all the celebration, God told Philip to go south to speak to just one person. Philip was so sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit that he left a successful event to preach to the Ethiopian eunuch who just happened to control the queen’s money. The result of his obedience was that Philip led this powerful man to faith in Jesus Christ and baptized him in the water along the road. As a result of this single conversion, we can see that the wealth of Ethiopia was made available to the kingdom of God for the preaching of the gospel in the continent of Africa.

For the time that Philip spent converting the eunuch, God redeemed the time and Spirited Philip away supernaturally to Azotus, another region.(Acts 8:39-40) God’s ways of determining where we invest our time, talents and treasure often have little to do with results. The danger for each of us is to determine that we are in God’s will simply by the success or failure of what we do. The measure of success in God’s kingdom is just obedience, obedience to the Word of God and obedience to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Philip responded in obedience to the direction of the Holy Spirit and as a result, the central banker eunuch and countless many in Ethiopia were saved because of his vast influence.

We all need to be listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit as we meditate on the Word of God day and night. God may prompt us to speak, witness, preach, teach, help, give, or come alongside another like He did with Philip. Tune in and ask God to help us hear the Holy Spirit’s voice so that we may be used mightily for God’s glory in these last days.
