High Time

“If you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments [the Word of God] which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you HIGH above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God.” (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)

In the 1960 Bing Crosby movie High Time directed by Blake Edwards, a millionaire hamburger restaurateur widower decides to get a college education at age 51. Rodney Dangerfield tried a remake of this in 1986 with Back To School, but he still got no respect. God’s version of High Time is that He will set us high above all nations of the earth. After Moses, God chose Joshua to lead the children of Israel to take possession of the Promised Land. After 40 years in the desert, the children of Israel were a hardened people who rebelled, complained, disobeyed, and disappointed God. To make the people obey Joshua God magnified, elevated, exalted and promoted him as the Undisputed leader in their eyes.

God is no respecter of persons and He will do it for us as He did for Joshua. “And the LORD said to Joshua, ‘This day will I begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.’” (Joshua 3:7). If God honors us, sets us high above and not beneath, magnifies and promotes us, makes us the head and not the tail, then no living soul on earth can stop us no matter how hard they try. But to receive honor from God we must first pass the test of humility as we obey His Word. “The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility.” (Proverbs 15:33).

When High Time comes, God will glorify and honor us not with the honor of men like Nobel, Pulitzer or Oscar that fades away like grass (Isaiah 40:6-8) but with a blast that lasts. “Surely, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and nations who do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and the Holy One of Israel, for He has glorified you.” (Isaiah 55:5). We all need to be spending time in God’s presence, seeking His face as we daily meditate on and obey His Word, waiting patiently for the time when God will honor us and set us on high.

After much humility and obedience to God’s Word, when we receive grace and honor in the sight of God, all our desires will be fulfilled, and then some because the blessings will literally overtake us. “Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great, and to give strength to all.” (1 Chronicles 29:12). “At that time will I bring you back, even at the time I gather you; for I will give you fame and praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I return your captives before your eyes, says the LORD.” (Zephaniah 3:20).
