MimicTherefore be imitators of God as dear children [copy their parents]. And walk in love [agape], as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. (Ephesians 5:1-2) In the 1997 movie Mimic, Mira Sorvino battles killer insects who are sick of A Bug’s Life after they learn to mimic themselves and decide to go for a Happy Meal with Hannibal the cannibal. The English word mimic comes from the Greek word mimetes, meaning to imitate, copy or mimic as closely as possible. It is like an Elvis impersonator in Vegas who imitates or mimics the personality, voice, clothing and gestures of Elvis Aaron Presley, the deceased King of Rock and Roll. The Apostle Paul is telling us that because were born of God as His dear children, we are to imitate Him in the same way that children imitate their parents. Jesus Himself is the perfect example of how we are to imitate God for He said, I do nothing of Myself; but as my Father taught me, I speak these things. (John 8:28) Jesus repeated in John 14:24, The word which you hear is not Mine but the Fathers who sent Me. Jesus was essentially saying, I am His Son and I dont do anything except what I see God My Father doing, and I dont say anything unless I hear what God says. We mimic God when we walk in love for God is love (1 John 4:8). This love is from the Greek agape meaning unconditional love for others. We can do this because of the love of God that has been shed in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. We copy God when we intimately know and DO His Word for God and His Word are one (John 1:1). We imitate God when we speak the Word from our mouth and call those things that be not as though they were (Romans 4:17). We mimic God when we give for love gives and giving is the only proof that we have overcame our selfish flesh so that the cancer of greed will not consume our soul. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Jesus was tempted as a man in all ways as we are, yet He was without sin. When Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to us after He ascended into heaven, Jesus gave us all the tools He used to copy God and live a life without sin. The Holy Spirit is our standby, our strengthener, our comforter, our advocate, our teacher, our trainer, and our guide on the paths of life. When we listen to the Holy Spirit and follow His lead as we meditate on and DO the Word, He will show us how to Mimic God and be His children and royal heirs to an inheritance of glory.Copyright © 2002 Eddy Ministries.
