Shine

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16).

In the 1996 movie Shine, Australian actor Geoffrey Rush won an Oscar for his portrayal of troubled but gifted concert pianist David Helfgott. We don't have to be good actors or pianists to Shine “for it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6) Jesus is the light of the world, and He is changing us to be lights of the world like the lights of Hanukkah or Christmas. (Matthew 5:14)

Darkness can never overcome the light that comes Shining Through like Michael Douglas. “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:5). Jesus said that if we follow Him, obey His Word and depart from evil then we would never walk in darkness. (John 3:19). We are commanded to have a coming out party, to come out of the wicked and perverse generation that we should find no longer groovy, say ‘No, Baby!’ to Dr Evil, and walk according to the Word of God so that we all can be Gold Members as His light shines brightly in our hearts. (Philippians 2:15)

Jack Nicholson was good in The Shining but Jesus will definitely shine in our hearts. Once we were enslaved to sin and darkness, but now we are the light in God and must walk as children of light.(Ephesians 5:8) We are more Royal than the Tenenbaums or the Windsors because we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that we should display the praises of God who has called us out of darkness into His marvellous light. When we were in sin our whole bodies were in darkness. “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
(Matthew 6:22-23).

We did not know where we were going because we were busy Dancing in the Dark with Bruce Springsteen instead of in the shadow of God Almighty who is the real Boss (John 12:35 and Psalm 91:1). Through faith in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour we can come to the light and walk in line with God’s will. (John 12:46) As we Shine before men with our good works, giving, tithing, forgiving, sharing the gospel of salvation and walking in love, we light up other people’s lives better than Debbie Boone, lost souls get saved, the Holy Spirit moves in and God is glorified.
