A Separate Peace

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)

In the 1972 movie A Separate Peace based on the John Knowles novel, two boys became best friends in 1943 and enjoyed peace in the midst of World War II. As born again and Spirit-filled believers we have an even better peace because Jesus, the Prince of Peace, lives inside us (Isaiah 9:6). But knowing the peace of God and having the peace of God are two different things. The peace of God is a separate peace because it doesn’t come from the world.

There is no peace for the wicked because they don’t know God nor do they obey His Word. (Isaiah 48:22) The world’s peace is based on treaties and things happening, but events change daily and treaties are made to be broken like the 1993 Oslo Accords or the Nazi-Soviet Non Aggression Pact of 1941. We may think we’re living in peace according to what’s happening on CNN, but that is not peace because the only real peace comes from the Lord Jesus Christ. Because the Middle East is such a powder keg, God has promised in His Word that He will prosper us as we pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6-7).

We greet friends with peace and love but do we really know what peace is? True peace is the power of salvation and blessing from God and great peace comes to those who love and DO God’s Word (Psalm 119:165). In Hebrew the word shalom which is translated peace in English actually means wholeness, with nothing broken, nothing missing. Shalom is also translated as well, whole and prosperity. The peace that God intends for us to have is wonderful well-being physically, emotionally, spiritually, relationally and financially. That’s what Jesus brings for He is the power and the presence of God’s peace. In fact, the chastisement for our peace was upon Him (Isaiah 53:5).

We may say or do things that remove us from God’s peace, and it may seem like we have no peace at times. But God is still there, and His peace is there for one of His many names is Yahweh Shalom (Judges 6:24). The key to knowing God’s peace is recognizing our weaknesses that can rob us of His peace. We therefore need to know the Word of God and know ourselves well so we can recognize the things that trigger the words and actions that keep us from enjoying God’s peace.
