Adaptation

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

In the 2002 movie Adaptation, Nicolas Cage portrays real life screenwriter Charlie Kaufman who is struggling to adapt the non-fiction book The Orchid Thief into a screenplay. Hollywood has long been trying to adapt its secular, anti-God TV and DVDs full of adultery, fornication, witchcraft, homosexuality and violence into our moral fabric but God says otherwise. The Bible clearly says for us to not be conformed to this world. We live in the world but we are not to be influenced by it.

We are to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. We are to shine in the darkness that surrounds us with the light of God. If we live in sin and party like the world, we’ll be overcame by the world and come short of the glory of God. We must not let the world squeeze or adapt us into its own filthy mold. Instead we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds as we meditate on the Word of God and adapt ourselves to its dictates and DO what it says to do.

The will of God is the Word of God, and we live in God’s perfect will only if we obey His Word. We overcome the world by having our mind transformed to think like God thinks and act like God acts. And as our soul prospers because we renew our minds with the Word of God, we’ll prosper and be in health (3 John 2). When we see something in the Word, say, “I agree with the Word, and from now on I’m doing the Word instead of what I used to do.”

If the Word says to forgive someone who used or abused us, we forgive. If it says vengeance belongs to God, then let God deal with it so we don’t have to get Payback like Mel Gibson. If it says to give offerings, to tithe to support God’s work, to help someone, to sow so we can reap, to go into the world and preach the gospel to very creature, then we do those too. When sin tempts us, we don’t have to give in. When fear knocks at the door, let faith answer, and we’ll see that no one is there. As we learn to live by faith in the Word of God, we'll find ourselves changing and prospering every which way, and sooner or later, the world will be trying to adapt to us.
