Big Daddy

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.” (Romans 8:15-17)

In the 1999 Adam Sandler comedy Big Daddy, a 30-year-old man searched for fulfillment by adopting a 5-year-old boy and got more than he bargained for. The good news is we all have been adopted by a Big Daddy who is much more loving than Adam Sandler and His name is God. Abba is Hebrew for father, we are descendants of Abraham through Jesus and in fact the name Abraham means father of many nations. In the English language, abba is better translated as daddy for it is a term of endearment.

Contrary to what we may think, it is very Biblical to talk affectionately about God as daddy. Abba is a word that signifies closeness, for it speaks of an intimate relationship that's been developed with time. Father is one thing, but daddy is another, and since God is all powerful, it is only fitting that we call Him not Puff Daddy, but Big Daddy. God is such a Big Daddy that He made us heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, meaning whatever God has is ours and whatever anointing Jesus has we have also, and that is everything for the meek shall inherit the earth (Psalm 37:11).

When we grow up, our fathers were sometimes father and sometimes daddy. When we were out for a Happy Meal, camping, fishing or hunting, he was daddy. When he whipped us good, gave us a lecture or yelled commands that were meant to be obeyed, he was father. God is like our earthly father for He's not only our father but also our daddy. But unlike many earthly fathers, God is always there for us 24 hours a day and longs to spend time with us. God is not a deadbeat dad who won’t pay child support, a workaholic who comes home late or an absentee father who is locked up or is never there.

God is love and His agape love for us is unconditional. As God’s children, we need to be serious and sincere with God by daily meditating on His Word and obey it so He can bless us. At other times like during praise, thanksgiving and worship we can afford to hang loose with Him as daddy. If we hang out with God enough times to get to know Him well as Big Daddy as we spend time in the Word of God to seek His face, we’ll want to be close to Him all the time for Father Knows Best and there is no high like the Most High.
