Roots

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8).

Author Alex Haley made TV history in 1977 with his epic mini-series on ABC called Roots, about the generational saga of an African-American family. Likewise, we can find references to Roots in the Bible. In the Book of Jeremiah we see a situation in which the temptation to solve a problem is so great that we trust in man’s way to solve it instead of God’s way. The prophet Jeremiah drew a distinction between the man who trusts in his own effort to solve his problem and the man who trusts in God when he cannot see the outcome because he walks by faith in the Word of God.

The man who trusts in his ability likes to go to Burger King where he can have it his way. After many failures he discovers that his efforts amount to nothing and that all is vanity. He does not possess any knowledge of God or the Word of God and is under a curse (Jeremiah 17:5-6). His heart is far from God as he lives by the flesh, feelings and emotions with his Carnal Knowledge and as a result he does not have a Whopper of a time.

On the other hand, the man who trusts in God bears fruit despite his difficult circumstances. He does not shrivel or fade away when the heat comes. On the contrary, his roots dig deeper and deeper into the infinite grace of God as he spends more time to meditate on the Word of God, and he continues to bear fruit to the glory of God. When a plant lives in an arid climate, its roots drive deeper and deeper into the soil in order to get more water. This forces the plant to develop an elaborate root system that is far stronger than normal because it is forced to go deeper to get the water it needs.

God may force us to go deeper into the grace of His love in order to build a greater foundation of His Word in our lives, so that there will be less of us and more of Him. The lean times of famine, lack, debt, poverty, isolation, shame, sickness or oppression are divinely designed to accomplish this. If you are in this pickle, don't complain but relish that God will water your soul with His Word and provide the favor and blessing you need to continue to bear fruit, indeed much fruit for His kingdom.
