A Walk in the Clouds

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.” (Exodus 13:21)

In 1995 Keanu Reeves starred in the romantic movie A Walk in the Clouds about a soldier who returned from World War II who helped an unwed pregnant Hispanic woman by posing as her husband so that her old-school Mexican father won’t kill her. If we live our lives by the Word of God and be guided by it, we will not have the unwed and pregnant problem that was such a family disgrace and social stigma decades ago before Hollywood started the avalanche of sex, violence and ungodly programming.

We too can go for a walk in the clouds with God our father in heaven or even better, be on cloud nine with God as our guide and provider. In the Exodus story, God manifested Himself as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night to lead the children of Israel in the desert for 40 years. The pillar of cloud was a symbol of the divine presence of God, and it was a visible reminder to the children of Israel that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was with them, protecting and keeping them as they jingle all the way.

God also showed up in the cloud in Isaiah 4:5: “...then the LORD will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory will be a covering.” Unlike Jim Carrey, the pillar of cloud was really The Majestic over the tabernacle of God. It was a clear and present reminder that God was the ultimate and all-powerful protector and defense against our enemies.

The days of the tabernacles are long gone, but God still promises to provide the same cloud to cover each and every one of us as living tabernacles of His Holy Spirit with divine guidance and protection against the forces of evil. Why take a walk on the wild side like the rest of the world when we can walk on the God side in the clouds? Rolls-Royce can only produce the Silver Cloud which will break down, depreciate and may even get stolen, but God Almighty has all of us covered with the cloud of His glory as we seek His face daily and spend quality time with Him in His Word.
