The Shadow

A man will be as a hiding place from the wind, and a cover from the tempest, as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” (Isaiah 32:2)

In the 1994 movie The Shadow, Alec Baldwin plays a superhero who battles his nemesis who is building an atomic bomb in New York City in the 1930's. In the scorching, intense heat of the long, hot summer, nothing is more precious than a shadow, a place of shade or shelter. It is so priceless we can’t even buy it with a MasterCard.

Fortunately, God has provided the shadow of His presence in Psalm 91 along with all the protection we need. Burt Reynolds could only give us Evening Shade on TV from 1990-1994, but God has it made in the shade for us in Isaiah 25:4 and 4:6. Additionally, God has such a cool and refreshing place in His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The world we live in with its emphasis on materialism and hedonism is like a spiritual desert, destitute of any life or water where weary travelers find no oasis, refuge, and relief. Jesus is the one and only place of refuge and fortress, for He is the great Rock of Ages, offering the refreshment of living water in His Word and a giant shadow to those who are stressed from the trials and tribulations of life.

Psalm 121:5-6 says “The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.” In the Hebrew culture, the right hand is the stronger working hand. Unlike the weaker left hand, it is the hand of might and power and it denotes the place of protection. Ever since Abraham, Hebrew fathers blessed their children with the right hand. God has promised in His Word to keep, garrison or to protect us so that we are covered from day to night with His shade or shadow.

Andy Gibb could no longer take us Shadow Dancing, Tom Selleck lasted only one season as one of The Shadow Riders on TV in 1982, and John Malkovich tried to be Shadow of the Vampire, but it is God the Creator who supplies the shadow. In a world full of shady characters, God is faithful like He has always been. God never changes, and He will never leave us nor forsake us. Offering shade, solace, protection, comfort, and refreshment to our souls, the shadow of God is the much needed shade on our right hand where the heat of battle is most intense as we wage war against the devil and his crew.
