Analyze That

“A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

In the 2002 sequel to the 1999 mob comedy Analyze This called Analyze That, Robert DeNiro the mob boss fakes insanity to be released from federal prison into the care of his psychiatrist Billy Crystal. We all can analyze this or anlyze that as we make plans, but if God is not the originator and director of the plan, then that plan is doomed to fail. The prophet Jeremiah lamented, “O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.” (Jeremiah 10:23)

So often, we set out to plan things like business, marriage, children, relocation or a vacation. The merits of what is being planned may be humanitarian, charitable and kind, and it may even be a worthy endeavor. However, the Bible teaches that we must do the will of God our father no matter how good our intentions are. When Jesus said He came only to do the will of the Father, He could not do anything that was not what God wanted, no matter how noble or righteous it might be.

God must give us the vision for what He calls us to do. After we have the vision, we must ask God if He wants us to manifest that vision. God wants to direct each step of the planning process. David learned this lesson when he battled his enemy. He inquired of God about the Philistines, and God said, “when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall go out to battle.” (1 Chronicles 14:15)
