National Security

“Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.” (Psalm 62:1-2)

In the 2003 Martin Lawrence comedy National Security, two mismatched security guards are partnered together to bust a smuggling operation. But the one thing that is desired by each of us that Martin Lawrence could never provide is security, much less national security. All of us want to be able to cling to a rock that is stable and solid when the storms of life come. True security will not be found in men because even the best of them will fail us or make mistakes.

We can be bamboozled by men, and then they lose their power, influence or die. (Mathew 15:14) Nor can we base our security in might because power is fleeting as one can be in power one day and removed the next like the Shah of Iran. (Zechariah 4:6) We cannot depend on money either, nor in things that a MasterCard can buy. Money can be lost due to business conditions or bad investments, and thieves can steal our money and crooks take our possessions. Material things could only impress a Material Girl like Madonna but they are deceptive because they appear to be satisfying and permanent when they are actually temporary and like the Rolling Stones, can get us no Satisfaction. (Mathew 6:19-20)

We cannot depend on us for we too, make mistakes. We are human and can err in judgment, and cannot handle every trial that comes our way. (Proverbs 3:5-6) True security can only be found in God, not Social Security. National Security for us as a nation is found in God as we repent and return to the Bible and God’s ways of doing things, not in beating the drums of war in Iraq or North Korea nor embracing the bankrupt morals of Wall Street, Madison Avenue, Vegas or Hollywood. The key to security and indeed prosperity is a right relationship with God that provides peace, restoration and strength no matter what storms may come, even The Perfect Storm of George Clooney.

True security is found in constantly hearing and obeying the Word of God and the Adaptation of the Word into our lives. To build our lives upon the rock, we must say goodbye to Tom Hanks, get off the Road to Perdition and place our trust in Jesus Christ (Acts 16:31), repent of our sins as we make Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2 Corinthians 7:9-10), confess Jesus before A Few Good Men (Romans 10:9-10), be baptized into Christ so our sins are Cast Away (Acts 22:16). Then and only then, as we obey the commands of God in the Word, our lives are built on The Rock that will never tremble or fall.
