What Lies Beneath

“The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’” (Psalm 110:1)

In the 2000 thriller What Lies Beneath starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, the wife of a professor investigates the murder of a college student who has been appearing to her in the lake in her lakefront home. The good news from God is that the devil is what lies beneath our feet as our footstool. Even though he lost all his authority as the loser that he really is the day Jesus resurrected from the dead, he’s been running around like Clint Eastwood in The Outlaw Josey Wales for the past 2000 years killing, stealing, and destroying all who are ignorant of this fact because they don’t study the Word of God.

But a day is coming real soon when all the evil he has done on earth will be put totally underfoot by the restoring power of God. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church and we as the Body of Christ are His feet. We are the ones who will yield His authority and power and trample on sin, poverty, oppression, sickness and every other demonic thing on earth. We’re the ones God is using to make Jesus’ enemies His footstool. That’s what Jesus meant when He gave us the Great Commission to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature...cast out demons in Jesus Name...speak with new tongues...take up serpents...lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mark 16:15-18)

Jesus was saying, “Be My foot for all power and authority has been given to Me in heaven and in the earth, so use it to put the devil under your feet.” Instead of obeying Him and DO what the Word says, we’ve sat around wondering why it’s taking so long for Jesus to come back because our feet is the furthest thing from our mind. We’re the reason why it’s taking so long because Jesus is waiting for us to step out in His power, put the devil where he belongs under our feet, and win the billions of lost or backslidden souls for the kingdom of God by preaching or financing the gospel of salvation.

He’s waiting for us to bury our doctrinal and denominational differences and start doing what God commanded us to DO in His Word. The Bible says that one can put a thousand to flight and two can put ten thousand to flight. When we join forces, we increase our strength not just exponentially, but astronomically. If we could just realize that we’re the feet of Jesus, we could evict the devil out of the world’s affairs and he’ll be Gone In 60 Seconds like Nicolas Cage.
