The Sun Also Rises

“Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon; and Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the people had revenge upon their enemies.” (Joshua 10:12-13)

In the 1957 movie based on the Ernest Hemingway novel The Sun Also Rises, Tyrone Power plays an American journalist living in Paris in the 1920s who enjoys cafes, love and Spanish bullfights. Japan may be the land of the Rising Sun, and Sean Connery may have starred in the movie, but it is God the Creator of heaven and earth who has the power to make the sun go down, sit still, or arise.

When we face a difficult situation and ask God for help, we can expect Him to do the extraordinary just as He did many times in the Bible. That’s what happened when Joshua got in a tough spot and called on God for help. In Joshua 10, the Gibeonites made peace with Israel, and when the Amorites, Gibeon’s enemies, found out about it, they join forces with other kings for a united attack on the city of Gibeon. The men of Gibeon sent an urgent message to Joshua to come and help them fight. “Do not fear them,” God said to Joshua, “for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you.” (Joshua 10:8 )

As Joshua and his men pursued the Amorites, it started to get dark, but Joshua didn’t want to stop fighting until his army had crushed the enemy. He prayed to God for the sun to stand still and the moon to stand in its place over the valley. Although nothing like that had ever happened before, and has never happened since, the sun and the moon did not move one iota until Israel finished defeating the enemy. The sun stood still for about one whole day or 24 hours because of the prayer of one man.

Our God is a powerful God who answers prayer and God is saying the same thing to us, “Don’t be afraid of the devil’s attacks of sickness, debt, poverty, and oppression because he has already been defeated by My Son Jesus at the cross 2000 years ago.” What a difference a day make as God fights for us when we call on Him in faith. God is no respecter of persons, so when we pray and believe Him like Joshua did, God can move supernaturally to help us. As we learn to trust God by meditating on His Word day and night, we have the blessed assurance that not only The Sun Also Rises, but we the sons or children of God will also rise with power and glory.
