Ransom

“So the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” (Isaiah 51:11)

In the 1996 Mel Gibson thriller Ransom directed by Ron Howard, a rich man turned the $2 million ransom money for his son into a bounty on the head of the kidnapper when the drop went wrong. The good news is we don’t need Mel Gibson to pay our ransom in unmarked bills because God has already paid a King’s ransom for us through the precious Blood of Jesus on the cross. Not only did God ransomed us from sin with a princely sum far exceeding 2 million dollars, He is also our refuge and dwelling place.

We have no reason to fear that evil will come upon us nor any sickness or disease will come near us, for God will dispatch His angels to guard and keep us from falling, and cover our heads with everlasting joy. Because God is with us we can venture where angels fear to tread and Enterprise way beyond Star Trek where no man has gone before. Not only does God covers us with His love and protection when He ransomed us, He also conferred His righteousness and holiness upon us. Because of God’s grace and mercy, He sees us as holy, set apart for His use, despite our besetting struggles with sin and the flesh on Temptation Island.

Like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon, we all will become what we already are in God’s eyes as the completion of the Holy Spirit’s work in us reveal the beauty of His holiness. Because we all have been ransomed from death, sickness, poverty, oppression and destruction caused by the disobedience of Adam in the Garden of Eden, we need to ask God to place within us a yearning for more of Him and His holy character, and create within us a dissatisfaction to remain where we are.

We need to ask God to examine our thoughts and intents, and remove all impurities from the recesses and dark corners of our hearts so that our sins become as detestable to us as they are to Him. We are to love what God loves and hate what God hates. We must see to it that our actions are in line with the Word of God. We are to be holy just as God is holy. Apart from divine intervention, we cannot be the person God desires us to be. But by the power of the Holy Spirit, we can do all things through Christ, the Anointed One and His burden-removing, yoke-destroying anointing, who strengthens us. We are the ransomed of the LORD and we can be more holy and joyful than Tom Cruise, because with God no Mission is Impossible.
