Darkness Falls

But when I looked for good, evil came to me; and when I waited for light, then came darkness.” (Job 30:26)

In the 2003 horror movie Darkness Falls, an evil tooth fairy returns to seek revenge on the town that lynched her 150 years ago. While the film bombed at the box office, God is speaking to us about the meaning of darkness. Whether we are in the dark or not, God’s ways are indeed mysterious for some of His ways appear to bring us into the darkest places, as if He were indifferent to our circumstances.

It may appear that God is looking away from our pains and sufferings, but the painful events in our lives are meant to bring us to the end of ourselves so that there will be less of SELF and more of Him, so that we might discover the treasures of darkness. When darkness falls, we begin to see light that we never knew existed in the Word of God. Our sensitivities become heightened and our ability to see through spiritual eyes is illuminated as we spend time in the Word day and night. And unless we are taken into these times, our souls will never develop any character needed to live in victory and prosperity.

Knowledge of the Word is gained through meditation, but wisdom is gained only through the painful episode of darkness. After we go through the dark periods, we discover that God was, in fact, with us the whole time. Even the psalmist lamented “Why do You stand afar off, O LORD? Why do You hide in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1) It may not feel or appear that God is there when we are in the midst of the darkness, but He most assuredly is there with us. God has told us countless times in the Bible that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

It may not feel like God is there because He hangs out with LL Cool J and does not Deliver Us From Eva or the circumstances of sickness, poverty, debt, oppression, shame, separation or lack. God in His infinite wisdom does this so that we might become more like Jesus, for even Jesus the Son of God learned obedience from the things He suffered (Hebrews 5:8). We need to therefore embrace the dark times, praise and thank God for our deliverance, and receive the priceless wisdom that God intends for us to have, because for everything else, there's a Master Card.
