Dressed to Kill

“Therefore wash yourself and anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.” (Ruth 3:3)

In the 1980 Brian DePalma directed thriller Dressed To Kill, Michael Caine plays a psychiatrist to a murdered woman who was reluctant to get involved in the investigation. What does the Bible say when someone is ruthless? We dress not to impress, but dress to kill. When Ruth was getting ready to meet her future husband Boaz for the first time, she was instructed by her mother-in-law Naomi to wear her best clothes because she would never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Before Boaz the kinsman-redeemer met his wife, he was so Ruthless that Ruth got dressed up to the nines to impress this very important man for something that hasn’t happened yet because God only blesses prepared people, because when the time comes, we may not have a chance to get ready.

The lesson here is that we must be prepared to stand out from the world that we live in. Chances are, anytime we dress to kill for where we’re going like Jackie Chan wearing The Tuxedo and getting stuck in traffic at Rush Hour, we’ll look out of place where we are and the people of the world will look at us funny because we obey the Word and don’t do things the world’s way.

We may not have a Lincoln Navigator, but we know our Final Destination because of the rich promises in God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit, and we’re not called to blend in, but we’re called to stand out Far From The Madding Crowd as the light of the world and the salt of the earth. (Matthew 5:13-14) We must meditate daily on the Word of God so that we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we’ve got a definite destination, and that is eternal life with an inheritance of glory full of abundance that begins not in the sweet by and by, but in the here and now.

If we are Clueless like Alicia Silverstone about where we’re going, we’ll be tempted to start making excuses and explaining why we’re so different. But when we know where we’re going we don’t care, and we’ll let them stare because when The Others look at our preparation, they should see our glorious destination and want to be like us, not Like Mike. We all must therefore prepare now for things our mind has not conceived, our eyes have not seen and our ears have not yet heard because our God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above what we may ask or think. (Ephesians 3:20)
