Smooth Operator

“Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:40)

Sade may have rocked us with Smooth Operator, but there was an even better story in the Bible about David and Goliath. David was the world's first smooth operator when he chose five smooth stones to go after the nine feet six giant Goliath with his sling. Goliath was an NBA first round draft pick two feet taller than Yao Ming and a champion of Gath, one of the five major cities of the Philistines. By picking up five stones instead of just one, David was ready to go after not just the champion from Gath, but the other four champions as well. Long before Jack Nicholson, David picked up Five Easy Pieces because his faith was in God who earlier had delivered him from the paws of the lion and the bear. (1 Samuel 17:36)

David did not succumb to fear on seeing giant problems like Goliath because his God was greater than Goliath. “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4) With God on his side, David went Ballistic not with Antonio Banderas or Lucy Liu, but with a missile guided at warp speed by the Holy Spirit and won the battle with just one smooth stone.

The stone is not Sharon Stone, Kid Rock, The Rock, Keith Richards nor Mick Jagger but is none other than Jesus Christ, the chief cornerstone, precious and elect in Zion.(1 Peter 2:6-7) Our weapons are different from the weapons of the devil for his weapons are lies, deception, anger, lust, and sin. Our weapons, on the other hand, are based on the truth of the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).

We can fight any battle because God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) Love casts out fear as we rest and get perfected in the love of God. “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:18) We may not be David, but we all can be smooth operators as we polish our rough edges with the Word of God because God has already given us the victory (1 Corinthians 15:57) and made us more than conquerors (Romans 8:37) through Jesus Christ.
