Temptation Island

It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread [material things] alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”(Matthew 4:4)

Unlike the TV show Temptation Island, life is more than just a reality show where single contestants try to tempt attached couples to be unfaithful. The world we live in can be one big fat temptation island and if we are not careful, we will be trapped in the bondage of death and sin when we neglect the Word of God which gives us our great salvation. When the devil comes against us with sickness, lack, fear, temptation, or just plain vanilla trouble, don’t try to talk to him or figure out what’s up. Instead, do what Jesus did in Matthew 4 by boldly speaking the Word of God to him.

The Word of God is a Lethal Weapon more powerful than Mel Gibson, and sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). Jesus didn’t try to match wits with the devil who is the father of lies. Every time the devil tried to tempt Him, He said, “It is written.” Jesus used the Word of God and defeated the devil each time. By the same token, we are to defeat the devil every time as we speak the Word of God over our situation, over sickness, disease, poverty, oppression, and every temptation the devil may throw at us.

After Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit led Him into the wilderness to wrestle with the devil. Unlike Josh Hartnett, Jesus had fasted Forty Days And Forty Nights and was hungry when the devil came to tempt Him, saying, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

The devil then took Jesus up to the pinnacle of the temple in the holy city and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give his angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up.’” Jesus answered him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”

Lastly, the devil took Jesus to an exceedingly high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and told Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” But Jesus said, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only shall you serve.’” The devil got sick and tired of hearing Jesus speak the Word of God so perfectly that he left Him alone so he can do it some other time.
