The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

In the same hour the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joint of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other.” (Daniel 5:5-6)

In the 1992 thriller The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Rebecca de Mornay played an evil nanny who seeked revenge on her employer and his family. As the old saying goes, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. God in the Bible has a story to remind us that it is His mighty hand that rocks the cradle of our world. King Belshazzar of Babylon, the cradle of ancient civilization, had given a lavish banquet with his posse of a thousand lords.

Belshazzar even had the gall to order the gold and silver vessels stolen from the Temple in Jerusalem by his father Nebuchadnezzar and he, the lords, his wives and concubines drank from them. It was then that Godfinger showed up and wrote on the wall, and none of the astrologers, soothsayers or even James Bond could decipher the words.

When Daniel was called, however, he gave meaning to the words: “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN” Mene meant that God had numbered the days of his kingdom and finished it. Tekel meant that he had been weighed in the balances and found wanting. Upharsin meant that his kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians. Belshazzar was killed that very night as the Babylonian kingdom was given to Darius the Mede just as Daniel had interpreted. (Daniel 5:25-31)

The lesson to be learned here is that it is not hip and there is a terrible price to be paid for ignoring God Almighty who is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. We are surrounded by those who mock God, live in sin, and ignore His Word. The world that we live in now is like Belshazzar who acted irreverently toward God, and the handwriting against him is written in the Word of God. Ignorance is no excuse when it comes to the things of God. If any of us don’t believe in hell, fine, hell’s still there and you’re still going. Belshazzar mockingly drank wine from the holy vessels of honor which had been set apart and dedicated to the worship of God.

Today billions of lost and unsaved souls made light of an eternity without God, and countless others live their lives based upon the selfish needs of the flesh, what others have said, what seems logical to the carnal mind, what Madison Avenue sells, what Hollywood presents, what Harry Potter says, but not based on the truth of the Word of God. When we ignore what God has said in His Word, we are neglecting so great a salvation that Jesus died on the cross to give us if only we have the faith to receive this priceless free gift and confess Him as our Lord and Saviour. We are like Mel Gibson in The Year of Living Dangerously, for the handwriting against us is on the wall.
