Witness

“For ‘whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’ How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent [and supported by tithes and offerings]?” (Romans 10:13-15)

In the 1985 Harrison Ford movie Witness, a big city cop must protect a young Amish boy who is state evidence and a material witness to a murder by living in Amish country until trial. Just like in the criminal justice system of Law & Order, it takes death-defying courage to be a witness, and it takes even more courage as a believer to stand up and boldly witness for Jesus. Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep may not realize this, but these are The Hours when God wants the unashamed witness of His Son Jesus Christ to be proclaimed in every arena of life, including Hollywood.

The Bible gave us a powerful word in Mark 16:15 exhorting us to go into all the world and preach the gospel of salvation to every creature so that billions of lost souls will get saved. We may say that we don’t need to talk about God or act spiritual because our lives is a witness. While a good example is important, if all that was needed, Jesus should have never died on the cross to shed His precious Blood. He would have only needed to show us how to keep The Ten Commandments and live a good life in obedience to the Word of God.

But the problem is we all have sin in our hearts from the fall of Adam in the Garden of Eden, and our lives, however humanitarian they may be, cannot wash away the stains of sin. It was the sinless Blood of Jesus and His death, burial, and resurrection 2000 years ago that paid the ultimate price for sin and gave us the victory over sickness, poverty, oppression, death, hell and the devil. If we don’t speak up and sound the voice of God’s Word, we are like a lifeguard on Baywatch who looks good, swims well, knows CPR, and has the best gear.

Then some one get caught in a riptide, and he or she screams for help. But the lifeguard just sits there on his easy chair enjoying his tan and doing Babewatch instead, looking at them through his binoculars. The lifeguard is prepared and equipped, but if he doesn’t do anything or gets distracted, that person will die needlessly. God hasn’t called us to simply look good in our Sunday clothes as His born-again children, He has called us to be Onward Christian Soldiers, to be bold witnesses to win the lost to Jesus and He has even equipped us with the power of the Holy Spirit so we can be His witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. (Acts 1:8)
