Undisputed

“[Jesus] having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in [the cross].” (Colossians 2:15)

In the 2002 boxing movie Undisputed starring Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames, the world heavyweight champion of boxing finally met his match not in the ring of Las Vegas, but when he landed in federal prison. When we watch a boxing match between two good fighters, and one of them gets knocked out, we would not hesitate to sign a contract with Don King or Pay Per View for $10 million to fight him right then, because someone had already stripped him of his power to harm us.

Even better, the Bible gives us a contract with Jesus the King of kings that declare us the Undisputed champion of the world over the devil. Our enemy, the devil and his demonic crew, scheme and plot against us every single day. But we don’t have to be afraid of his wiles and devices, because Jesus has already defeated the devil, reclaimed all his possessions, displayed the spoils of war, and stripped him naked like the Romans in the procession of victory.

Unlike the gimmicks at Publishers Clearinghouse sweepstakes, we have already been declared the undisputed winner in Christ Jesus. We therefore can endure sickness, poverty, debt, oppression or anything when we know in advance that we're going to come out on top. On the cross 2000 years ago, Jesus stripped the devil of his ability to harm us and He has made us more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37)

A conqueror has to fight for his victory, but a more than a conqueror or hyperconqueror just enjoys the spoils of victory without ever putting up a fight. Sometimes we give up too easily when our adversary looks burly and strong, but everything he is and everything he uses against us has already been defeated. We’ve been called to fight the good fight of faith as we obey the Word of God, and fortunately God through His Holy Spirit is with us. When we believe what Jesus has done for us, we can walk around like a champion because we’re already the winner.
