A Farewell to Arms

I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and see, it has not been bandaged for healing, nor a splint put on to bind it, to make it strong enough to hold a sword. Therefore thus says the Lord God: ‘Surely I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and will break his arms, both the strong one and the one that was broken; and I will make the sword fall out of his hand.” (Ezekiel 30:21-22)

In the 1957 Rock Hudson movie based on the Ernest Hemingway novel A Farewell To Arms, an ambulance driver fell in love with a nurse in the western front of World War I. We may not realize it, but our arms are far too short to box with God Almighty, so we need to say farewell to arms if we are not living right with Him. Spike Lee may not tell us this, but the Bible is full of warnings for us when we don’t Do The Right Thing: Isaiah 45:9 “Woe to him who strives with his Maker!”; Psalm 89:13 “You have a mighty arm: strong is Your hand, and high is Your right hand.”; Isaiah 52:10 “The LORD has made bare His holy arm in the eyes of all the nations”; Psalm 135:10 " He defeated many nations, and slew mighty kings."; and Psalm 37:17 "For the arms of the wicked shall be broken."

In Jeremiah 48 Moab was another nation that was broken by the arm of God because he magnified himself against God. God broke the arms of Moab like He did for Egypt and for any other nation that goes against Him. Jeremiah 21:5 “I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger and fury and great wrath.”

Make no mistake about it, if we as an individual, people, or nation persist in our sinful ways, God will break our arms or strip us of our wealth, strength and power. May be we have not had our arms broken, but we can feel God twisting our arms, as He has been dealing with us time and again about that temper, lust, pride, greed, manipulation, control, envy, jealousy, compromise and excuses for sin, worldliness and materialism.

The record shows that Frank Sinatra took the blows when he did it My Way, so it’s time to wake up and repent for God’s grace will give us victory if we’ll stop and do things His way according to His Word. To those who fear God, His arm will bring salvation.(Isaiah 59:16) God’s mighty arm will gather His lambs, carry them in His bosom and gently lead those who are with young. (Isaiah 40:11)

We need not fear the future because God holds it in His hands, and His mighty arm brings salvation to all who fear Him. No matter what circumstances we face, the arm of God, which made heaven and earth, redeemed us and brought us out of darkness and sin, will strengthen, help, and uphold us all the days of our lives.(Isaiah 41:10)
