Home Alone

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditate day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:1-3)

In the 1990 comedy Home Alone, 8-year-old Macaulay Culkin was accidently left behind when his family left for Christmas vacation and he had to use all his resources to defend his home against a couple of Dumb and Dumber burglars. In the world we live in, we can be stronger, better and far more prosperous if we are home alone.

In the old days, blacksmiths know that the strongest wood was taken from trees that stood alone, for they would select hickories that grew in open space to make the best axles and wagon tongues. Those trees that stood alone are the strongest for they had withstood the storms of life, and their wood was of the finest grain and strong as steel. We are to be like that hardened wood from the lone tree, where in the midst of pervasive ungodliness and worldly lusts, we do not compromise, bend, crack or break because we are strong in God and in the power of His might.

We are not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly, the ones who have no fear of God and who are without God in the world. They are so material that they are unconcerned about spiritual things. They are lost, corrupt, vengeful, wicked, hostile to God, and guilty as sin. They have no rule but to satisfy every carnal lust. The righteous person does not say as they say nor do as they do. He stands alone, and therein lies his strength.

We are not to stand in the path of sinners, the ones who miss the mark, who err from the Word of God, who are in open rebellion against God. The righteous person avoids the path of the sinners like the plague. He stands alone, and therein lies his strength. We are not to sit in the seat of the scornful, mockers who have no religion and who laugh at sin. Their conscience is seared, and they openly defy all that is sacred to God. The righteous person has nothing to do with them. He stands alone, and therein lies his strength. The righteous person takes great pleasure in God’s Word. He submits to its teaching and obeys the Word.

Because he lives separated from evil and studies and meditates on God’s Word day and night, he is like a fruitful and flourishing tree who leaves do not wither. His spiritual life is marked by good works, fruitfulness, and prosperity. He is continually digging deeper into the waters of the Holy Spirit and growing in the anointing and favor of God every day. He is set apart as a vessel of honor for God’s use. He is of such monumental value to God and man because he stands alone, and therein lies his strength. If we stay away from the ungodly, the sinner, and the scornful, and live by the Word of God, then we can be strong for God’s purpose as we stand alone, alone from all evil influences and corruption, and alone unto God and His Word.
