The Lion in Winter

“You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.” (Psalm 91:13)

In the 1968 movie The Lion in Winter starring Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn, the three sons of King Henry II battled to inherit his throne in the year 1183 AD. In the Bible the lion, the king of all the beasts, symbolize three things. The lion is our Lord Jesus Christ for He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah in Revelation 5:5. The lion signifies the righteous for the righteous are bold as a lion in Proverbs 28:1. Lastly, the lion is indicative of the devil who walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8)

The devil may roar like a lion but he is a loser because Jesus already defeated him at the cross. That’s why we are commanded to submit ourselves to God, resist the devil, so he will flee from us in James 4:7. If we don’t submit ourselves to God by obeying His Word and we don’t resist the devil then he appears to be greater but the truth from the Word of God is the God that is within us is greater than the devil that is in the world. (John 4:4)

Disney could only create Simba the Lion King, but Jesus is a Lion who is the King of kings. As born-again believers we are brothers of the Lion of the tribe of Judah who promises in His Word to give us strength to tread upon and tramble the lion and the serpent. “In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul.” (Psalm 138:3)

When the prophet Daniel was thrown in to the lions’ den he didn’t have Insomnia like Al Pacino because he knew God would deliver him. Because of his faith God sent the angel to shut the mouth of lions in Daniel 6:22. With the Spirit of God Samson killed the lion with his bare hand (Judges 14:5-6), and the same Spirit of God in us today gives us the strength to resist the world, the flesh, and the devil.

We need not fear because God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) The lion is bold and majestic because it is mighty as the strongest among the beasts, and does not turn away from any, (Proverbs 30:30) and until we are aware of who we are in Christ as we spend time in the Word, we are like a lion in winter.
