My Giant

“Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, ‘What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine [Goliath] and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?’” (1 Samuel 17:26)

In the 1998 movie My Giant, Billy Crystal the Hollywood agent tries to shepherd a simple-minded Romanian giant over 7 feet tall into the movies. We all may be facing a giant today, a giant of sickness, debt, oppression, business failure, fear, divorce, poverty or any other kind of affliction. But the good news is we have a weapon more lethal than Mel Gibson that once turned David the shepherd boy into a bear-ripping, lion-killing, giant-whacking champion of Israel.

That Lethal Weapon was a blood covenant with God Almighty. In Biblical times, circumcision was the sign of that covenant. So, when David called 9 feet 6 Goliath uncircumcised, he was really saying: “You may be a giant and you may be big and strong, but you have no covenant with God and that’s why I can whip you.” Like David, we too have a covenant with God that will help us to defeat any giant we may face, but ours is much better.

The covenant of David had a wealth of blessings to those who kept it, but it also curses for those who don’t. Ours doesn’t (Galatians 3:13) because ours is a New Covenant or a New Testament that Jesus bought with His own precious Blood, not the blood of animals. Not only did He died so we can inherit His will, Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day to administer his very will for us. The covenant doesn’t depend on our limited human ability, but on Jesus and what He had done, and all we have to do is simply believe it and receive it.
