An Officer and a Gentleman

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.”(Ephesians 3:20)

Richard Gere rose to stardom in the 1982 movie An Officer and a Gentleman about a Navy brat with a bad attitude problem who fell in love with factory girl Debra Winger while training for Navy Flight School. Long before Richard Gere was born, the Holy Spirit had been both an officer and a gentleman. God the Holy Spirit is an officer of the Holy Trinity sharing power with God the Father and God the Son.

The Holy Spirit is also the perfect gentleman sent to help us to do the will of God, to teach, strengthen, guide, comfort, protect, and counsel us — but He won’t do a thing until He’s asked. That’s why James says if we’re in trouble or afflicted, pray, because it is prayer that puts the power within us to work. The Spirit of Almighty God, the Spirit that hovered over the face of the deep in Genesis and carried out God’s Word at creation is the same Spirit inside us waiting for us to call on Him.

As believers, we have the power of the Holy Spirit inside us, but that power that will do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think won’t go to work until we put it to work. The Holy Spirit is in us, waiting on us, and He’s ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week saying, “I’m here to help you and strengthen you. I want to comfort and guide you, and I want to wash that problem right out of your hair.”

The Holy Spirit has wonderful things He wants to show us, and He’s waiting with the power of God to overcome every obstacle of life. As we meditate of the Word of God day and night, the Holy Spirit will give us deep revelation and understanding of how God works. As we take time to pray and seek God’s face, we must also learn to pray in the Holy Spirit so we can build ourselves up by our most holy faith (Jude 20). We need to pray according to the Word of God with power and understanding. We need to pray not just for ourselves, but for our nation and others and activate that dynamic power within us today.
