CavemanDavid therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him. (1 Samuel 22:1-2) In the 1981 movie Caveman, Ringo Starr the former Beatle turned caveman seeks revenge on a much bigger caveguy for the hand of a beautiful cavewoman. The Bible has a more modern version in the story of David the caveman. For a while David had the Midas touch and everything he touched turned to gold. Samuel anointed him to be the next king of Israel over all of his brothers, he killed the Philistine giant Goliath with just one smooth stone, King Saul chose him as a warrior and musician, the army loved him and wrote songs about him. But then he lost it all his job and marriage failed, his mentor Samuel died, his best friend Jonathan couldnt help him, and Saul chased him so much that he had to hide in a cave like Osama. Like David, eventually we all will spend time in the cave. Its where we end up when all our finances are gone, our employer gives us a pink slip, we're in debt up to our eyeballs, our business venture failed, our dreams have shattered, weve lost someone we love, the taxman wants to audit us all the way back to the Vietnam War, the wife takes the house and drove it away, and our good health is gone. The hardest part about being in the cave with distress, debt, and discontent is thinking, I am all out of love, God has forgotten me. Ill never get out, Ill die here because there's no cable. But the cave is where we learn things about ourselves we could never learn anywhere else. Its where God does His best work in molding and shaping us as the Master Potter, because now all our other props are gone and we are like clay in His hands. All weve got is God, and we discover to our surprise that His amazing grace is enough, and in fact Hes more than enough. Its where our worst inadequacies confirm that were way out of our league, and God sends His mighty divine power to manifest through our weaknesses. What is Batman without his Batcave? Above all else, what distinguishes top performers in every field is their enthusiasm and persistence in the face of setbacks and the fact that they never cave in. Our response to failure is more important than our intellect, looks, charm or money, and as long as we mediate on and obey the Word of God, we can rest assured that in due season God will deliver us from the cave.Copyright © 2003 Eddy Ministries.
