The Sound of Music

“And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the LORD, and should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: ‘Praise the LORD, for His mercy [and goodness]endures forever.’ Now when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.” (2 Chronicles 20:21-22)

In the 1965 Best Picture winner The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews plays a woman who leaves an Austrian convent to be a governess to the children of a naval officer widower. The Sound of Music is not only an Oscar winner, but the sound of music from singing and praising God can also make us winners. In 2 Chronicles chapter 20, the Bible tells us that large armies were marching against Judah.

They were so outnumbered, they didn’t know what to do. So they fasted and prayed until they received a word from God who told them: “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (2 Chronicles 20:15) In response to that word, they put together a praise choir, they appointed singers and praisers and sent them out in front of the troops. And when that choir began to sing, God Himself set ambushes against the men of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they all were defeated.

When the battle was over, not even one Jew was killed, and when they came to take the spoil, they found so much valuables, garments, jewelries and other precious things that it took them literally three days to bring it home. That victory all began with praise and God did all the fighting. If we are looking for that kind of victory today, then we need to stand up and shout, “Praise the LORD! Glory to God, for His mercy and goodness!”

After all, some of us are in the same situation those Jews were in with an army of debt, sickness, poverty, disease, shame, and oppression marching against us, but Jesus has already defeated them on resurrection morning of the Third Day, and all that’s left for us to do is trust Him and begin to praise. As we meditate on the Word of God, make the sound of music and sound out those praises today. Speak them, sing them, declare them against the devil because when he hears them, he’ll know how big a loser he really is because God is with us.
