Serving Yahweh

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve....but as for me [Joshua] and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)

In the 2002 comedy Serving Sara, Matthew Perry the process server was supposed to serve Elizabeth Hurley with divorce papers but instead was lured into serving her with a Godfather-like offer he couldn’t refuse. Hollywood may want us to serve the god of money, power, SELF, and pleasure where anything goes, but God wants us to serve Him, not Sara. Choosing to serve God and side with God’s Word is a continual challenge because it’s not something we do just once. It’s a process of choosing to believe and act upon the Word of God over and over in every circumstance.

Many of us are born-again when we’ve chosen Jesus as our Lord and Savior, but we need to continually choose Him as our Healer, our Financier, our Deliverer, our Provider, our Protector, our head of household and the head of our ministry. That choice can sometimes get tough, but God has promised that we can handle it because 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

What God is saying is that He will not allow us to be stuck on Temptation Island without search and rescue. With every temptation that checks in at the Hotel California, He’ll make sure that we can always leave. Unlike Kevin Costner in No Way Out, God will always make sure we have a way of escape. The devil doesn’t come to tempt us while God is off somewhere else, unaware of what is happening.

The Spirit of God is constantly with us, providing us with ways to overcome. God matches the toughest temptations we face with the kind of Lethal Weapon even Mel Gibson doesn’t have and the power we need to conquer them and He always makes it possible for us to choose life over sin and death. So choose to walk in love as we love our neighbors, spread the gospel of salvation to the lost, and help the needy.

Choose to walk by faith by believing what the Word of God says and not what our circumstances say. Choose to live by the Word and not the lures of the world, the flesh and the devil. Jesus is the only Way to God, He is the Truth because He is the Word, and He is the abundant God kind of Life, so divorce the world and Sara and choose Him.
