Old School

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ [the Anointed One and His anointing], he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

In the 2003 comedy Old School with Will Ferrell and Luke Wilson, three men disenchanted with life try to recapture their college days of wild and crazy partying with all of the college and none of the education. That may be Hollywood’s version, but in God’s eyes old school is the way we were before we were born again, before we were resurrected. When it comes to resurrection, most of us think of a stone rolled away from an empty tomb and a risen Lord Jesus 2000 years ago on Easter morning.

But the good news is Jesus not the only One who has been resurrected, we who are in Christ have been resurrected too. We were spiritually resurrected the day we confess Jesus Christ the Lord of our lives. On that fateful day we passed from death to life, from sin to righteousness and the greater part of our resurrection has already happened. When we made Jesus Christ the Lord and Saviour of our lives, the Spirit of God that created the universe hovered over us. The glory of God came into our being and it literally destroyed the old, sinful person that we were.

The Way We Were when we watch that Barbra Streisand movie died, and instead A Star Is Born. Indeed there will be a day when the body we live in will be raised, buffed and glorified, but we don’t have to wait until then to be free from sin, sickness, poverty, oppression and failure that goes with this natural world because we’re free from all that right now. Some of us may be thinking, “If I’m so free, why do I barely make ends meet, in debt, can’t quit drinking, smoking or lose weight, can’t get off the treadmill of life, and why I still get sick or can’t find a soulmate?”

Because we’ve let the devil convince us that we’re still under his control, and we’ve let him talk us into living as if we’re still old school or spiritually dead. We need to begin considering ourselves alive, study the Word of God day and night, and think of ourselves as the ones who already have the abundant life of God. Eminem may want each of us to Lose Yourself, but we’ll go much further than 8 Mile if we consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to the mighty resurrection power of Jesus so we can start living the God kind of life today.
