The Horse Whisperer

“But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace [shalom or wholeness, nothing missing, nothing broken].” (Psalm 37:11)

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)

In the 1998 movie The Horse Whisperer, Robert Redford is a horse healer of mystical talents in Montana who slowly heals the soul of a girl and her horse after an accident, and even gets her mother to fall in love with him as well. Robert Redford may whisper to any horse or play baseball like The Natural, but God wants to whisper His Word to us so we can be meek and submit to His will. If we were to watch a well-bred and trained horse, we would notice that although he is powerful, strong and spirited, he is completely submitted to the will of his trainer. This takes time because the trainer must develop a special relationship with the horse, which is a long and consuming process. But the process creates a deep, lasting loyalty and partnership.

It is the same in the spiritual life of the believer where meekness reflects a similar relationship between God and His children surrendered to His will. As we come to know God better by meditating on His Word day and night, and learn of His ways in these emails, and as we develop a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him, we will be able to conform to His desires and will for us. Even though we may have previously been powerful, strong and spirited like the horse or listened to Careless Whisper many times, we can become completely submitted to God’s will.

Meekness means mildness of disposition and gentleness of spirit. The gentle person, unlike Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman, is not occupied with SELF at all. This is a work of the Holy Spirit and certainly not of the human will. Meekness in the Biblical sense is the very opposite from weakness because it is power under control. Our Lord Jesus was a perfect example of power under control. As Creator of the universe, He had total, unlimited power and yet in order to obey God’s will, He subordinated that power and kept it under control.
Jesus the Son of God and indeed God Himself, came to earth as a bondservant (Philippians 2:7)

After Judas betrayed Him, when Peter was going to protect Him, Jesus told Peter to put his sword back and said, “Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53) Jesus could have unleashed enough power to destroy every weapon of mass destruction on earth, but He meekly kept His power under control for God’s loving purposes. This is the kind of meekness God desires in us so that we will inherit the wealth of the earth from the sinners (Proverbs 13:22) as heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ [the Anointed One and His anointing]. (Romans 8:17)
