Reality Bites

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)

In the 1994 movie Reality Bites, film major Winona Ryder must choose between staying true to her art versus selling out and successful yuppie Ben Stiller or the philosophical Ethan Hawke. Although the Bible calls us kings and priests (Revelation 1:6), more than conquerors (Romans 8:37) and world overcomers (1 John 5:4), those truths from the Word of God are still becoming real for many of us. We’re still learning who we really are while we let the apparent reality of life bites us.

David had been anointed king by the prophet Samuel when he was just a shepherd boy in front of all his older brothers. (1 Samuel 16:13) David had known for years that One Fine Day he would rule over Israel but somehow the reality of it hadn’t really sunk in. Then in 1 Chronicles 14:2, “So David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, for his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of His people Israel.” Finally, it dawned on him when David perceived that God had confirmed him as the king. At that moment, being king ceased to be something David had only thought about. It became something he really was, as he could see himself as The King Am I.

Like King David, we have been given a royal office where we are more Royal than the Tenenbaums. But it’s not until we believe it that we can exercise the power or authority that goes with that office. If we’re sick, we can say according to Isaiah 53:5, "By His stripes I’m healed," and we can try to believe for healing until we are blue in the face. But if we don’t really perceive ourselves as whole, healed, delivered, restored and healthy, if we don’t see ourselves as the healed instead of the sick trying to get healed, we won’t get any help from God Almighty.

Once that realization hits that we are, in fact, the healed, no one will be able to keep us from getting well and enjoying our divine health, not even the devil, the HMO, or the doctors. We can cross over the line from trying to believe to actually knowing by meditating on the Word of God day and night. Bite back the reality of our circumstances by seeing ourselves through the Word of God and claiming its rich promises of blessing, increase, favor, protection, restoration, promotion and deliverance until the reality of our royalty, sonship and victory rises up in us.
