Head of State

God is my strength and power, and He makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places. He teaches my hands to make war, so that my arms can bend a
bow of bronze.” (2 Samuel 22:33-35).

In the 2003 political comedy Head of State, Chris Rock is the first black American president to enter the White House, where the only thing white is the house. In the Bible, we see the life of King David who was a head of state and mighty warrior who God described as a man after His own heart.(Acts 13:22) God took David through a training ground that appeared to be cruel and unusual punishment. God chose him as a teenager to be the next king or head of state of Israel, yet King Saul rejected him and hunted him down like Benecio Del Toro in The Hunted.

Long before Harrison Ford, David was The Fugitive for many years and even lived in a cave like Osama Bin Hidin'. He had uprisings in his own family, relationship problems, and more ups and downs than Yo Yo Ma. David did not have a life free of problems, he made mistakes when he committed adultery with Bathsheba, killed her husband and numbered his troops, but he learned from them and repented when he failed. David’s training made him into the great man and head of state that he was, and without these hardships, David would not have accomplished what he did.

At the end of his life, David summarized his relationship with God in 2 Samuel 22 with a teaching about God’s ways of dealing with us. God was David’s source for everything. God was His Provider, Deliverer, Protector, Blessor, Restorer, Healer, Guide, Teacher, Strengthener, Comforter, and Head of State. God put His Super on David’s natural and gave him the ability to achieve extraordinary things. It was a lifelong training ground that elevated him from one level to another, with the occasional dropping into The Abyss of despair and hopelessness. Even without Denzel Washington, every day was Training Day for David.

These are God’s ways, and they drive us deeper and deeper into His heart who has prepared a way for us so we can be molded into His image. If we encounter problems in the road of life, learn to trust God at His Word and let God take us into the wild blue yonder, into the heights and depths He desires for us. God never promised us smooth sailing or a rose garden, but He did promise to be the captain and cruise director along the way even in The Perfect Storm, and that is The Shipping News that is music to our ears.
