The Perfect Storm

And now I urge you to take heart [be of good cheer], for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.” (Acts 27:22)

In the 2000 George Clooney movie The Perfect Storm, an unusually intense storm pattern catches commercial fisherman unaware in the North Atlantic and puts them in mortal danger. Although we cannot escape the storms of life like poverty, sickness, divorce, oppression, lack, and especially the perfect storm, we can indeed survive them if we believe God for our deliverance.

In Acts chapter 27 the apostle Paul was traveling in a ship to Rome where he was one of 276 people on board. (Acts 27:37) For many days strong winds blew against the ship, and the sea violently pounded the deck, tossing the vessel to and fro. In a frantic attempt to save themselves, the crew threw everything they had overboard. Then they went on a fast and cried out to God to save them. But still the storm raged, and the lives of the passengers remained in jeopardy. The crew appeared to be without hope until Paul stepped forward and gave them an anchor of faith for their souls.

Paul told them The Shipping News that he had been visited by an angel that night who had told him, “Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you” (Acts 27:24). In those darkest moments Paul believed God when he said, “Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me” (Acts 27: 25). The next day, everyone on board made it safely to the island of Malta (Acts 28:1) because of the faith of one man.

There may have been times in life when we don’t understand the storm we are going through, but we must refuse to give up. Paul believed God and not just he, but the entire crew and passenger of the ship survived. Maybe you are in the midst of a storm right now. You may feel like abandoning ship like those on Paul’s ship. But don’t be tempted to do it if you want to be a Survivor, for you’ll be stuck on Temptation Island forever. No matter how perfect the storm appears to be, hold fast to your anchor of faith in the Word of God. Believe God as you study His Word for wisdom and guidance, and you’ll be safe because He’ll never leave you nor forsake you.
