Saving Private Ryan

If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

In the 1998 Steven Spielberg World War 2 drama Saving Private Ryan, Tom Hanks and his men try to save their comrade, paratrooper private Ryan, who was dropped behind enemy lines on D-Day. Private Ryan may have been saved, but being saved according to God is quite another story as it is the act of asking God’s forgiveness for our sins and making a full and complete surrender of our will and life to Jesus the Messiah.

It is entering into a personal relationship with Jesus, and it means that we are born again (John 3:3) and that our desires, ambitions, and plans are given to God’s will and design for our lives. Salvation is free for everyone as a gift from God. It may be free, but it is not cheap as it was bought with the precious Blood of Jesus on the cross. It is not earned, and we cannot become good enough to be saved. We come to Jesus just as we are, and Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) It’s not difficult to receive Jesus Christ as Savior, as we just have to ask. We can be anywhere, any time, and all that is required is that we repent of our sins and believe.

Private Ryan was only saved physically from capture, but unless he knew Jesus, he was not saved in his soul nor in his spirit. Unless he knew Jesus, he would not have the peace of God nor experience the rest of God. Repentance is simply changing our mind, get off the Road to Perdition, and being truly sorry for our sins. It is far more than an intellectual decision because it is comprised of three things: change of mind, which only we can do; change of heart, which only God can do; and change of living, which is the result of giving our life to Him so we can live as a new creation where old things are passed away (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Whosoever believes on Jesus and His transforming power can be saved for John 1:12 says, “But as many as received Him, to them gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” The Bible also says we must confess out loud Jesus as Lord. Confessing Jesus publicly is as important as believing Him with our heart. (Romans 10:9-10) When we do that, we begin a personal relationship with God that changes our life forever, and we can be more saved than private Ryan.
