What a Girl Wants

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1)

In the 2003 movie What a Girl Wants, Amanda Bynes is an American girl who knows what she wants when she comes to England to search for her father, an aristocratic British politician. Mel Gibson may know What Women Want, but if God is leading us as our shepherd and we follow Him and obey His Word, we shall have no want. Unfortunately, some of us only feel better when we have more, and worse when we have less.

And many of us are always wanting something bigger, nicer, better, faster, prettier, younger, and newer where joy is one delivery away, one promotion away, one makeover away, one relationship away, one paycheck away, or one vacation away and happiness comes from something we deposit, drive, digest, drink, dance to or dwell in.

For those of us who are living in the prison of want, God has the liberating good news that we can be released if we learn to trust in Him. When David said, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want,” he found lasting pleasure in knowing that God will provide for his every need and understood that what we have in God is greater than whatever we may not have in life.

David figured out that the earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness (Psalm 24:1) and what we think is our stuff isn't ours for it is God who gives us the power to get wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18). When John D. Rockefeller died, he left everything and even for those of us not as wealthy, there has never been a funeral where we see a hearse pulling a U-Haul. Secondly, our stuff does not define us because Jesus said, “beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” (Luke 12:15)

When God looks at us He sees our faith and devotion to His Word, not our image, power, influence, money or possessions. Let God lead us as a shepherd leads his sheep to feed on green pastures and drink by the still waters. Let God restore our souls and lead us in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Let His rod and staff comfort us as we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Let God prepare a table for us in the presence of our enemies. Let God anoint our heads with oil and let His surely goodness and mercy follow us all the days of our lives. (Psalm 23:1-6) When our cups run over, what more could we possibly want?
