A Star is Born

“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’”(John 3:3)

In the 1976 Barbra Streisand movie A Star is Born, Kris Kristofferson is a dwindling rock star who helps a young singer rise to stardom while he gets more and more depressed. Barbra Streisand was born again as a star, but when Jesus said the words born again to Nicodemus, He was telling Nick at Night what it meant to have a covenant with God. When a baby from an unwed mother or an orphan is adopted, that baby is reborn. The baby got a new set of parents in addition to his biological ones, and through adoption, he has now become not just a child but an heir.

The baby couldn’t have done anything to earn its new life. The man and woman who are his new adoptive parents agreed out of love in their hearts and bestowed love, kindness, mercy, goodness, grace and favor on that child. Now he has access to ALL that they have, and that baby acts like part of the family. That baby is not just part of the family but the best part of the family because in Biblical times a covenant or adopted child had the same birthright of inheritance as the firstborn son, and he’ll never have a bad heir day.

When Jesus said, “Unless one is born again,” He was talking about the unmerited grace of God. He was talking about a new relationship of favor, a new family, a new covenant, a new authority, and a new power under God. We are born again when we confess out loud Jesus as Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-10), and we should not feel unworthy to receive the rich blessings God has for us. The blessings of increase, favor, promotion, restoration, healing, protection, deliverance and provision are ours and if it gives God pleasure in seeing the prosperity of His servants, imagine how much more it will be for His dear children. (Psalm 35:27)

Instead of worrying about and struggling with the needs of life, we can just walk boldly into the throne of God our Father in heaven like a firstborn son and receive whatever we need, and then some. As we spend time daily with the Word of God, discover what it means to be a blood-bought child of Almighty God with an elder brother like Jesus. A star is born, and we need to know what it means to be born again into the royal family of God, to be a child of God, to be an heir of God and joint heir with Christ. (Romans 8:17)
