The Sure Thing

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” (Psalm 23:6)

In the 1985 teen movie The Sure Thing directed by Rob Reiner, John Cusack is a college freshman on a road trip with Daphne Zuniga to California to meet a babe whom his friend described is the “sure thing.” There is no sure thing in life, but the only sure thing we can hope for is for “surely goodness and mercy” to follow us, to literally chase us down all the days of our life if we follow God as the sheep follow the shepherd. With God it’s a sure thing because He does not change (Malachi 3:6) and with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. (James 1:17)

Our moods may swing, our feelings may vary, our minds may change, our devotion may falter, and our faith may fail, but God never does. “If we are faithless, [God] remains faithful, He cannot deny Himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). Even on our worst days when we just lost our job, somebody just sued us, a loved one was diagnosed with cancer, and the children are hooked on drugs and Harry Potter we can still speak the Word and remind God of what He said, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me.”

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” is a promise from God that He will provide goodness to give us things we don’t deserve and mercy to keep us from judgment we do deserve. And God will provide not just on Sunday or Monday through Friday but ALL the days of our life. “Shall follow me” is another wonderful promise God made just like He did earlier with Moses, “All all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God.” (Deuteronomy 28:2)

We can’t get away from the blessings of God when we obey His Word because they will follow us, come upon us, and overtake us. God’s goodness even followed the wayward Jonah to the belly of a fish, Paul on the road to Damascus, Joseph into slavery and imprisonment, Daniel into the lions’ den, and John into exile on the island of Patmos so he could write the Book of Revelation. Think of the circumstances God has brought us through, the messes He has cleaned up, the doors He has opened, and be thankful for the goodness that we don’t deserve and the tender mercy that keeps us from The Terminator and Judgment Day.
