Bulletproof Monk

“Love never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13:8)

In the 2003 movie Bulletproof Monk, Chow Yun Fat is an immortal but mysterious Tibetan monk who has been guarding an ancient scroll for 60 years and must now look for a new scrollkeeper. The tagline of the movie says that a power without measure requires a protector without equal. We may not be monks from Tibet, but if we keep the scroll of God’s Word in our hearts, we too can become more Bulletproof than Damon Wayans because the power of God is indeed without measure. We become bulletproof when we are no longer dominated by the fear of failure.

Psychologists may tell us to adjust to it, but the Word of God tells us that there is a failure-proof way to live without it, and it is not The Way of the Gun of Benicio del Toro, but the way of love. If we want to know real success, we do not need to learn kung fu and get our Matrix Reloaded but rather we need to learn to be moved and motivated by love because that’s how Jesus was when He was on earth. When John the Baptist was brutally murdered and Jesus went to be alone, He didn’t detour from the way of love. Even in that emotionally painful time when people followed Jesus and just wouldn’t leave Him alone, He was moved with compassion and healed the sick in Matthew 14:6-14.

Jesus did retaliate from that senseless beheading of John the Baptist, and He overcame the works of the devil with the ministry of love and compassion. Huey Lewis could only sing about the Power of Love, but the love of God is without equal. Jesus defeated hatred with the God kind of love, and He attacked the devil in the spiritual realm by destroying his bondage of sickness and disease. Love and compassion goes beyond the surface to the very roots of the problem, and that’s why it never fails.

The good news is we all can operate like Jesus, because the Word of God says that His unconditional agape love has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5), and His love is perfected in us as we keep the scroll of His Word and obey it. (1 John 2:5) God is love (1 John 4:8), and unless we learn to love others like we love ourselves, we cannot be like God nor can we claim that God is our Father or lives within us. Become bulletproof as we meditate on the Word of God daily and commit to living the love life, and watch God turn failure into success at home, at work, at the gym, at the mall, at Starbucks, at social events or in any situation because LOVE is bulletproof and it never, ever fails.
