Raw Deal

But He was wounded for our trangressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace [shalom or wholeness with nothing broken, nothing missing] was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.”
(Isaiah 53:5)

In the 1986 movie Raw Deal, Arnold Schwarzenegger is an ex-FBI agent who is offered a raw deal to rejoin the FBI if he will help to kill a mobster who killed the chief’s son. Even if we like sushi, nobody likes a raw deal. If we bought two dozen eggs and some of them are broken, we wouldn’t hesitate to go back to the store and exchange it. Imagine how quickly we would exchange something that was a raw deal. If we ordered a gold chain online and the store sent us a box with sawdust, that would be a raw deal, and we’d make the exchange immediately.

Nick Nolte may be The Good Thief, but the devil is a bad thief and a liar who tries to sell us a raw deal. If we are experiencing poverty, sickness, oppression, failure and discouragement, it’s not ours because we’re holding on to the wrong package. We can write Return to Sender on the box because Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

Jesus came from heaven, where there is no poverty, no sickness, no SARS, no suffering, no war, no pain, and went to the cross for us. Jesus literally defeated death, sin, hell, and the grave, and He paid for all that with His precious blood and the stripes on His back — healing, health, prosperity, restoration, deliverance, protection, peace of mind, and wholeness is ours. We only have to make the exchange.

Jesus came to repossess our old lives and replace it with the glory of God He had in heaven. Jesus brought it with Him as the Son of God and freely made the trade for us at the cross. When Jesus cried out, ‘It is finished’ (John 19:30), it really was because there was nothing left for Him to do. God has done His part, and it’s up to us to reach out in faith and receive all the promises in the Word of God that He has already paid for — A Life Less Ordinary, a God kind of life beyond measure, surely overflowing with goodness and mercy all the days of our lives. (Psalm 23:6)
